Tutorial for the annotation editor ATHEN

As a part of the KALLIMACHOS project, a markup editor was developed for the work group Leserlenkung im Bezug auf Romanfiguren (reader guidance regarding to novel figures). Under the name of ATHEN (Annotation and Text Highlighting Environment), a desktop application based on Eclipse RCP 4 and Apache UIMA arose. You can find a comprehensive tutorial as well as access to the source code here.

ATHEN is scalable to the novel´s size. Furthermore, additional analysis-engines can be added to the program at runtime in this way. Thus, the actual process of annotation is mostly a process of improving on automatically generated suggestions. ATHEN enables the user to define own schemes of annotation in terms of the UIMA type system and annotate the texts accordingly. Alternatively, schemes can be created and used in OWL.

Apart from that, ATHEN provides further features:

  • support of OWL in order to create and annotate ontologies
  • support of Apache Lucene in order to answer queries about previously created annotations efficiently (whether manually or automatically created)
  • creation of figure networks
  • annotation of image data by means of special annotations in Apache UIMA
  • comparing annotations, e.g. from different annotators, with automatic display of accordance
  • complete support of process models of medical, ontological-based information extraction
  • configurable, automatic pre-processing and application of analysis engines based on UIMA
  • conversion in different formats
  • expandability by means of flexible OSGI-Design without changing the current code
  • self configurable user interface in order to set the visible information

Furthermore, ATHEN supports the annotation of the following features:

  • named entities
  • co-references
  • relations
  • direct speeches including narrator and the targeted entities
  • scenes
  • Konstituenzgrammatiken (grammar of constituence)
  • Dependenzgrammatiken ( grammar of dependence")
